Encounter (2011-2015) addresses the power dynamics in personal encounters in public or institutional spaces. This series grew out of the project Archipelago, which focused on people who already share a bond. However, in Encounter, the common ground—romantic or otherwise—needs to be negotiated, defined, or re-calibrated.
Using literature and oral history as a point of departure, I stage tableaus that explore interpersonal dynamics contextualized within a larger social framework. The open narrative between the characters in these photographs evokes a sense of possibility that has the potential of resolving itself in different ways.
