MY LITTLE ONE COMES FIRST

Family albums typically record particular highlights of family history—births, weddings, parties, holidays—but not feelings of disappointment and frustration, death or divorce. The relationship between a grandmother and a granddaughter in Spain during the late 20th century is the starting point for My Little One Comes First (2002-04), which compares and contrasts their perspectives on life and womanhood. Impacted by major events respectively—such as the Spanish Civil War and the transition to democracy after 40 years of dictatorship—, these women negotiate the past and the present, as well as their individual and collective experiences.

Old and new photographs converge in My Little One Come First, an album that embraces anti-climactic moments and ultimately records a conversation between two women of different generations.
